Graphic: Miss BumBum Contestant Nearly Loses Leg From Botched Plastic Surgery

A Brazilian model who once vied for the title of the country's most beautiful backsides has been left physically scarred through botched plastic surgery that nearly claimed her life.

New pictures have been released of Andressa Urach, 27, the Brazilian bombshell who finished second in her nation's 2012 Miss BumBum contest, that show the state her legs were left in.

The gruesome pictures, released by picture agency The Grosby Group, show severe scars and wounds on her body as she lies in her hospital bed. Her condition was so serious she almost needed to have her left leg amputated, the group said.

But after spending most of December in the hospital she is finally on the road to recovery.

She began to realize her health was in danger in the middle of last year when she began to feel a negative reaction to hydrogel fillers doctors injected into her upper legs to fill out her thighs and lift her butt.

She started feeling a lot of pain as her body did not absorb the injections. Instead her body tissue began rotting away, the agency said.

The physicians tried to drain the injections, but discovered her leg became infected and she was rushed to the Conception Hospital in Porto Alegre in late November.

The infection had spread throughout her body and she risked having organ failure, reports the Brazilian news outlet Globo.

The situation at the time appeared dire as her mother Marisete De Faveri pleaded for the public to pray for God to cure her daughter's condition.

But she has fought through several medical procedures, including blood transfusions, and her family is optimistic of a recovery, the outlet reported.

Urach was released from the hospital on Christmas Eve and on New Year's Day released a statement on her Instagram page wishing her fans a good year.

Sometimes I wonder at all the vanity in the world today!
