"SEPTA Police Sgt. Daniel Caban and Officer Darrell James were alerted
to the imminent birth and rushed to the train at 5:50 p.m., just in
time to see the baby's head crowning through the expectant mother's
sweatpants, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.
"When she was on the train I guess the baby said, 'I'm ready to come
out now,' " witness Toney Harris-Saunders, who helped the mother relax
on the subway, told NBC Philadelphia.
Caban got on his knees and helped guide the boy, loosening the
umbilical cord from around its neck.
The dad handed the officers a sweater to swaddle the newborn and
onlookers knocked on the subway train's windows and offered a thumbs
up, the Inquirer reported.
Mom and baby were taken to a nearby hospital.
